Job Overview
The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for leading the electrical design scope of multi-disciplinary engineering projects from concept through to completion. This role plays a critical part in developing innovative, technically robust, and cost-effective electrical solutions that meet customer specifications and project objectives. The position requires a proactive, detail-oriented design engineer with a strong understanding of control systems design, electrical engineering principles, and industrial standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Design Ownership: Lead the electrical design lifecycle for assigned projects — from initial concept development, system architecture, and detailed design, through to validation and delivery.
- Technical Input to Proposals: Provide engineering input during the quotation and tender stages, ensuring that all proposed solutions align with customer specifications, applicable codes, and design best practices.
- Electrical Control System Design: Develop detailed electrical control system designs using AutoCAD Electrical, including schematic drawings, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and interconnection schedules.
- Component Selection & Specification: Specify and select electrical components, instrumentation, and control devices based on performance, reliability, safety, and cost considerations.
- Bill of Materials (BOM): Generate and maintain accurate BOMs to support procurement and manufacturing activities, ensuring traceability and alignment with project deliverables.
- Design Validation & Compliance: Ensure all electrical designs comply with relevant standards (IEC, ATEX, UL, CSA, etc.) and are validated against performance, safety, and functional requirements.
- Documentation & Reporting: Produce comprehensive design documentation, test procedures, and technical manuals for Operations & Maintenance (O&M) deliverables.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with mechanical, instrumentation, and project management teams to coordinate design interfaces, manage risks, and optimize system integration.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the development of internal design standards, best practices, and design tools to improve engineering efficiency and consistency.
- Project Support: Liaise with operations and manufacturing teams for scheduling, resource allocation, and progress updates; support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site commissioning as required.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
- Chartered Engineer (or working toward) status desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years in electrical design engineering within industrial, oil & gas, or petrochemical environments.
- Strong understanding of switchboards, MCCs, power distribution systems, and control panel design.
- Familiarity with hazardous area equipment and certifications (e.g., ATEX, IECEx, Class/Div).
- Working knowledge of UL/FM/CSA and related international standards.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent CAD software.
- Practical understanding of on-site installation, commissioning, and maintenance practices.
- Ability to apply sound engineering judgment to balance design innovation with practical constraints.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills with the ability to translate technical concepts clearly.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement in every aspect of design and delivery.
