Alternative Heat design, develop and deliver a wide range of offsite-prefabricated, innovative, and sustainable building service solutions throughout the UK & Europe. \n\nWhat We Do: \n\nWe specialise in the design, supply, and installation of a wide range of prefabricated energy solutions, typically built in NI and shipped throughout the UK & Europe. We also offer turnkey design, build, and operate solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating solutions and have experience with successfully procuring and delivering many similar packages to a wide range of public bodies throughout UK & Europe. \n\nTeam Overview: \n\nThe Design department is responsible for developing innovative, practical, and fully coordinated mechanical and electrical building services solutions tailored to each project.
Working closely with clients, project teams, and the BIM department, the design team transforms concepts into detailed, build-ready technical designs that meet regulatory standards, client specifications, and sustainability goals. Their work underpins the technical accuracy and efficiency of our installations, ensuring seamless integration from planning through to construction. \n\nRole Overview: As an Electrical Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in delivering sustainable energy solutions that support the UK and Europe’s transition to low-carbon infrastructure. You’ll contribute to high-profile projects across healthcare, education, leisure, and high-rise residential sectors, helping shape greener communities through innovative design. Your scope will include designing general power and lighting systems, boiler plant electrical layouts, CHP generators, circulation pumps, inverters, and BMS control equipment.
You’ll work closely with an experienced design team using the latest AutoCAD and MEP 3D software to produce coordinated, build-ready electrical designs. Your work will directly support the UK’s transition to low-carbon infrastructure, helping deliver energy-efficient systems that reduce emissions and contribute to decarbonisation goals. \nJob Title | Electrical Design Engineer \nLocation | Birmingham \nHours | Monday-Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-3pm \nSalary | Competitive Depending on Experience \nResponsible to | Head of Design \nWhat You'll be Doing\n\nConduct Site Surveys of existing services to determine appropriate options for existing integration with BMS control packages.\n\nPrepare relevant electrical design drawings, plant selections, cabling routes and installation specification guides at the various design stages of the project i.e. – from initial concept design through to tender, construction and completion.\n\nDevelop project specific BMS control panel drawings and description of operation to match the selected plant.\n\nUnderstanding and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards.\n\nAttendance at project design meetings when required.\n\nAbility to work in conjunction with contracts managers and commissioning teams to assist in the commissioning process including proofing and streamlining of BMS controls operation.\n\nLiaising professionally with clients, suppliers, contractors and other relevant authorities as necessary at an extremely professional level.\n\nTravel to company sites in Scotland, England and Wales may be required occasionally.\n\nThe above list is not exhaustive, and additional tasks may be required as directed.\n\nWhat You Need to Have\n\nEducated to HNC/HND level in Electrical/ Control Engineering or an equivalent relevant qualification.\n\nMinimum of three years’ design experience within building services. \n\nExperience of using Electrical Design Software such as Amtech or Electrical OM.\n\nKnowledge of legislation, standards, safe working practices and environmental best practices would be desirable.\n\nExcellent communication skills both verbal and written.\n\nExcellent organisation, planning and attention to detail.\n\nAbility to work under pressure on one’s own initiatives to achieve self and team target.\nWhat You Would Ideally Have:\n\nMinimum of one year’s relevant experience in Design in a Commercial M&E Sector.\n\nExperience in using AutoCAD, MEP, Revit or Amtech packages.
