Overview

Band 3 Engineer – Vehicles (Train Testing) at Transport for London. This role is based in Acton / various TfL locations and requires unsocial hours and weekend working to access assets, especially during testing and commissioning of new assets.

Join the Vehicles Engineering team to maintain legacy assets to safe and reliable standards, while delivering new systems and solutions. You will be part of a team of engineers who work to connect communities and prepare assets for the 21st century.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering activities including delivering maintenance, enhancements, engineering solutions, root cause analyses, information, and testing to keep projects moving and support operational railways.
  • Provide functional and technical leadership, advice and expertise to staff and stakeholders; interpret technical strategy and company policy to satisfy business requirements.
  • Work as part of a professional engineering team to ensure vehicle assets are safe, working, and compliant; develop solutions with guidance from peers; become a trusted source of engineering advice.
  • Understand railway operations and train/asset testing within a system of systems; communicate complex issues to a wide range of stakeholders within TfL.
  • Continue to develop expertise within the team and share knowledge to aid other engineers and the team’s development.
  • Engage with a variety of projects across TfL’s vision and strategy, maintaining a passion for delivering high-quality outcomes.

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Ability to represent TfL’s interests with external parties e.g. regulatory bodies, standards bodies and suppliers.
  • High level of integrity; highly developed initiative; motivated with a focus on personal development.
  • Ability to act as Engineering Lead and use data analytics to drive performance.
  • Experience working with IT-based data systems; good organisational skills including decision making and creative thinking.
  • Customer focus and commitment to ensuring they are satisfied and well served.
  • Ability to rapidly understand and analyse new information, challenge assumptions, resolve inconsistencies.
  • Takes responsibility for own work with accuracy and timeliness.

Knowledge

  • Sustained professional development and contribution to the knowledge base of the profession.
  • Extensive experience in Rolling Stock/Vehicle engineering across multiple vehicle types.
  • Good commercial awareness of developments in Rolling Stock/Public Transport Vehicles and assurance best practices.
  • Good knowledge of relevant TfL, British and International Standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of the TfL business, obligations and priorities.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering safety management within railway/transport systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques related to Rolling Stock/vehicle testing and monitoring.

Experience

  • Extensive experience of Rolling Stock/Vehicle Testing and its application to high-value programmes.
  • Extensive experience of London Underground operations and maintenance and testing within the operational environment.
  • Experience providing professional engineering support to major projects and maintenance organisations with complex interfaces.
  • Hold or ability to obtain London Underground Protection of Workers on the Track and Test Track Master Licences.
  • Ability to interpret and present findings clearly, including tables, charts and graphics to summarise results for non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to learn and apply advanced data capture and analysis methodologies.
