Overview

Role: Full Stack Software Engineer

Location: Edinburgh (Hybrid – minimum 2 days per week in office)

Salary: up to £60k + package

The Data Gals have been retained by a Biotech scale-up developing next-generation smart detection products that use IoT devices and machine learning to identify biological threats in real time. Their first commercial product is nearing launch, with a broader platform vision across agriculture, animal health, and human diagnostics.

Responsibilities and expectations

  • Hands-on development with a strategic mindset, with potential to grow into a senior position as the software team expands.
  • Able to translate complex technical data into simple, intuitive user interfaces.
  • Comfortable coding, iterating quickly, and working across the stack in a cross-functional environment with scientists, engineers, and product managers.

Must Have

  • 3+ years’ experience in full stack development, ideally in a product-focused or start-up environment
  • Strong proficiency in front-end frameworks (React / Next.js or similar) with a track record of building intuitive, customer-centric applications
  • Back-end experience with Node.js and/or Python
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and API development
  • Strong collaboration skills; comfortable working with Product, Engineering, Data, and R&D teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data visualisation and dashboards
  • Exposure to IoT connectivity or real-time data systems
  • Understanding of user roles, permissions, and multi-level application views (e.g. technician vs manager)
  • Experience contributing to software architecture or shaping early-stage product strategy
