RPS, a Tetra Tech company is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to be based in Abingdon, Cardiff or London.

About the Team

The Environmental Compliance and Ground Engineering group with RPS is growing, and we need a consultant grade geotechnical engineer who is ambitious to develop their career further. You will work on exciting new projects across the UK, with colleagues from a range of backgrounds and experience providing support and guidance to help you and others achieve your maximum potential. Our ECGE team specialises in providing a wide range of clients with ground engineering consultancy support throughout the development lifecycle. There is a chance to grow and use your experience and new skills to provide geotechnical support on ground investigations and earthworks projects, and to provide interpretative advice and design to our expanding range of clients. No projects are the same, and vary in size and complexity, making this a great opportunity to gain maximise your potential and assist our business growth plans.

What you will be doing

  • The staff member will need to be flexible in work location with periods of time on site away from their main office.
  • Have recognisable experience in undertaking ground investigation, earthworks supervision and both factual and interpretive reporting. Comfortable working alone and as part of a team.
  • Geotechnical data assessment, analysis, geotechnical design, risk assessment modelling and reporting.
  • Phase 1 geotechnical and geoenvironmental desk studies.
  • Phase 2 Ground investigation procurement, supervision, field logging and sampling, monitoring, factual and interpretative reporting.
  • Undertaking geotechnical design calculations related to preliminary design of foundations, slopes and earthworks.
  • Supervising and monitoring earthworks or geotechnical projects for infrastructure and land development. Experience of Construction Quality Assurance monitoring and validation reporting in the waste or land development sector would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of engineering geology and geotechnics.
  • Plan and manage own project work to meet client requirements and deadlines in accordance with the QA system.
  • Respond to technical queries professionally and timely; take accountability for own contribution and delivery on projects.
  • Help grow our business by strengthening relationships with existing clients and supporting expansion into new markets.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high level of discipline knowledge.

Who we are looking for

  • With some initial experience within this sector in the UK, you’ll already be broadly familiar with what we’re looking for.
  • You will have recognisable experience in technical delivery of geotechnical investigation, engineering design and reporting, with knowledge of current methods, legislation, techniques and guidance.
  • Broad knowledge of geotechnical data assessment, analysis, design, risk modelling and reporting within the UK. Geoenvironmental (contaminated land) experience is advantageous.
  • Understanding of EC7 geotechnical design including earthworks, foundations, settlement, and slope stability analysis.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Good understanding of UK geology and geotechnical/soil mechanics principles.
  • Practical site investigation and laboratory techniques.
  • Understanding or experience of geotechnical design of foundations, slopes, and earthworks; basic experience with design software.
  • Experience of site investigation techniques and soil/rock logging, factual and interpretative reporting.
  • MS Office, use of Holebase/OpenGround, other design software and AutoCAD proficiency (advantageous).
  • Enthusiastic team player willing to undertake site as well as office-based work.
  • Keen to learn and expand experience; strong communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with team, clients and external bodies; willingness to learn financial and project management techniques.
  • Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to professional development.

Qualifications

  • Relevant degree or equivalent in Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or Civil Engineering with modules in Soil Mechanics or Geology and Maths.
  • Working towards Chartered membership of the relevant professional body.
