Overview
Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments, including Executive Board, Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships. You will be well organized, extremely helpful and resourceful, able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
Reporting to the Group Head of Engineering, you will fully support in developing, delivering and managing consistent structural engineering processes and procedures across the Group; overseeing the structural design of multi-storey developments and complex structures.
Responsibilities
- Oversee compliance of structural works with relevant UK Building Regulations, Eurocodes, and structural safety guidance (e.g., Institution of Structural Engineers, Building Safety Act requirements) for new build, high-rise projects.
- Provide technical guidance on structural risk and liability during acquisitions, project handovers, and asset management activities.
- Support the delivery of building safety cases under the Building Safety Act, ensuring all structural elements are well-documented and compliant.
- Develop and maintain internal technical standards and processes relating to structural safety and maintenance.
- Assist with procurement and performance monitoring of external structural engineers.
- Review and monitor structural reports from third-party consultants and contractors to ensure quality, rigour, and compliance.
- Establish good working relationships with Divisions and key stakeholders to encourage feedback for inclusion in future schemes to avoid wastage and improve the engineered solutions.
- Comply with responsibilities as defined in the Group’s Health, Safety & Environment Policy and ensure compliance with the same throughout the team.
- Conduct site visits and produce site compliance reports.
- Lead the assessment and remediation strategy for existing and legacy reinforced concrete frame buildings, including fire performance, carbonation, corrosion, and other durability concerns.
- Commission and manage structural investigations, intrusive surveys, and concrete testing programmes.
- Engage with regulatory bodies, warranty providers, and insurers where required on structural matters.
- Contribute to internal CPD and awareness around structural risk, compliance, and best practice.
- Maintain awareness of evolving legislation and industry guidance, ensuring the business stays ahead of compliance requirements.
Qualifications
- Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIStructE or MICE).
- Strong technical understanding of reinforced concrete frame structures, including degradation mechanisms, remediation techniques, and investigative methodologies.
- Experience with high-rise residential or mixed-use developments.
- Experience working in a compliance, due diligence, or structural assurance role – either in consultancy, client-side, or regulatory body.
- Up-to-date knowledge of UK Building Regulations, Eurocodes, the Building Safety Act, and other structural compliance frameworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interpret and present complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience managing and reviewing third-party structural investigations and reports.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
- Knowledge of safety case development under the Building Safety Act.
- Exposure to legacy buildings constructed in reinforced concrete.
- Understanding of fire performance of structural systems and interaction with passive fire protection.
