Junior Electrical Design Engineer - Water Industry

We are recruiting a Junior Electrical and ICA Design Engineer to join our Water Consultancy team operating across the UK. You’ll work on AMP8 and AMP9 projects, ensuring high-quality water services in a collaborative environment. RPS, now part of Tetra Tech, are engaged in long-term wastewater programmes across the UK water industry, addressing pollution and flooding challenges. Our wastewater consulting team undertake projects including urban drainage and water quality modelling studies; WINEP, SOAF, DWMPs and catchment investment planning; and the development of engineering solutions from feasibility through to outline and detailed design.

About The Team

As part of RPS Water Consulting (a Tetra Tech company), we provide asset management and operational strategy development to water industry clients, supporting business planning and delivery. This is an evolving industry that values innovation, dedication and teamwork.

About You

  • You will have experience liaising with clients to understand their needs, interpret data, and work to project plans. You will work within multidisciplinary teams to ensure project goals are met.
  • You will be experienced in producing technical outputs such as specifications, schedules, reports, load and instrument lists, cable sizing calculations, single line diagrams and system architecture layouts. Familiarity with collaborative planning reviews and solution design is preferred.
  • You will be able to provide engineering inputs and design outputs in collaboration with other disciplines, producing general arrangement drawings, 3D models, 2D plans and sections, and piping & instrumentation diagrams.
  • Good communication skills and ability to participate in collaborative design discussions, technical workshops and safety reviews (including HAZOPs and ALMs).
  • You will understand water and wastewater treatment principles and be experienced in assessing existing site infrastructure to develop electrical and ICA design solutions.

Your Responsibilities

  • Balance workload across a variety of projects from major long-term frameworks with water companies and contractors across the UK.
  • Work with junior and senior engineers and other stakeholders to support project delivery.
  • Interpret technical drawings and contribute to their production, ideally with AutoCAD and/or Inventor experience.
  • Undertake asset condition surveys and prepare reports and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the production of process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Prepare electrical and ICA design deliverables including calculations, reports, specifications, datasheets, drawings, schedules, and procurement documentation.
  • Support the project team in compliance with CDM duties of Designer, including design risk assessments.
  • Ensure quality assurance systems and procedures are followed and high standards are maintained.

Skills, Knowledge, And Experience

  • Strong technical understanding of electrical engineering and ICA principles.
  • Water industry experience.
  • Experience in load assessment and LV/MV distribution design.
  • Ability to use P&IDs to create equipment schedules; ICA and SCADA system architecture development.
  • Production of URSs, FDSs and control philosophies; preparation of specifications, reports and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and safety-focused design.
  • Time, cost and quality management of your work; ability to travel to site as required and to inspect equipment and installations.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar design tools is advantageous but not essential.

Qualifications

  • A degree-level qualification in electrical engineering or a closely allied subject, ideally IET-accredited.
