About Us
Viper Applied Science is a technical consultancy and software company specialising in protective design, modelling, and extreme load simulation. Our tools are used internationally by engineers tackling the most demanding challenges in blast, impact, and structural survivability. We’re a small, expert team with deep experience in physics, structural response, and advanced simulation — and we’re growing.
About the Role
We’re hiring a Lead Modelling & Simulation Engineer to lead structural modelling projects involving high-rate loading, blast, and impact effects. You’ll bring real-world engineering judgment, an eye for detail, and simulation experience rooted in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
This is a hands-on, technical role with a strong consulting element. You’ll work directly with clients across a wide range of sectors, helping them solve challenging problems, support projects, and interpret complex results. You’ll also contribute to the development of our own software tools and help support users in applying them effectively.
What You’ll Do
- Lead simulation and modelling tasks involving explicit FEA and dynamic loading (blast, impact, shock)
- Build and run models in tools such as LS-DYNA, Radioss, or similar solvers
- Create high-quality meshes using HyperMesh/LS Prepost
- Apply engineering judgment to structural response problems — from slabs and facades to protective walls and critical infrastructure
- Deliver analysis and reporting as part of consultancy projects
- Support and engage with customers using our tools in the protective design space
- Contribute to the design, development, and verification of new features in our simulation software
What You’ll Need
- A degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (MEng preferred)
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards it
- At least 3 years' experience in simulation and structural modelling
- Strong knowledge of explicit FEA and high-rate loading
- Proficiency with HyperMesh or similar tools
- Strong understanding of numerical and computational methods
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- UK national or permanent residency
Nice to Have
- A PhD or Masters in a relevant field
- Experience with Eurocode, UFC, AASTP, or other protective design standards
- Familiarity with Viper Blast, BlastFoam, Air3D or similar blast codes (a plus, not essential)
- Background in defence, nuclear, aerospace, or infrastructure sectors
- Experience supporting engineering software users or working in a customer-facing role
Why Join Us?
- Work on high-impact, technically challenging projects
- Collaborate with leading experts in protective modelling and simulation
- Help shape the next generation of engineering software
- Flexible working and small-team culture with real influence
- Office on the Fife coast, near Edinburgh (hybrid working supported)
