Leading business based in Birmingham is seeking a Lead Java Engineer to join on a permanent basis. This is a hybrid role requiring on‑site presence 3 days a week with 2 days from home. Salary up to £90,000 plus benefits.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Engineer to join our dynamic team building solutions for our public sector client. The ideal candidate will possess advanced technical expertise, strong problem‑solving abilities, and a proven track record of leading complex engineering projects. This role requires a deep understanding of engineering principles, quality assurance, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

Our mature Agile environment provides a collaborative space to work with fellow specialists from other disciplines. You will be delivering critical digital services from cradle to grave across a variety of projects featuring high‑performance cloud platforms using Java‑based languages and technologies, and on‑premise traditional infrastructure. As a member of our self‑empowered and multi‑disciplined teams, you will be given the freedom to shape the way you work to align with the latest industry practices, tools and technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring delivery against requirements, milestones, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate within self‑empowered, multi‑disciplinary teams to design, implement, and operate digital services for public sector clients.
  • Contribute to architecture and technical direction for Java‑based solutions and related technologies, on cloud platforms and on‑premise infrastructure.
  • Promote and apply best practices in engineering, quality assurance, and software delivery within an Agile environment.

Required Competencies

  • Advanced Technical Skills: Strong understanding of QA processes, experience in defining and implementing test designs, and breadth of experience across test levels. Ability to acquire new skills to meet evolving industry demands and customer expectations.
  • Problem‑Solving: Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly and effectively. High emotional intelligence to connect with and develop engineering talent.
  • Project Management: Proven experience in managing and leading engineering projects from conception to completion. Ability to drive value for clients while maintaining profitability.
  • Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Influence: Ability to assess and apply change across the organization, shaping and promoting best practices across the technical community.
