Lead Systems Engineer

Responsibilities

The following below is a representative but not exhaustive list of the requirements for this role with priorities on each changing as required.

  • Team leadingLead a small team of engineers across several locations.Manage stakeholders both internal and external
  • Systems EngineeringPredominantly mechanical systems integration engineering of the the design and packaging of mechanical systems and process equipment into nuclear gloveboxes. A background in this or similar PPE roles within the nuclear industry would be a distinct advantage.Producing optioneering reports to evaluate design concepts.Defining processes for design validation and requirement extraction.Developing equipment specification documents for suppliers (., ventilation systems, environmental monitoring systems).
  • RequirementsSystem and sub-system requirement identification should seek to link common requirements across PP&E projects via a requirements management tool, for example, DOORS. Requirements should be grouped as either Standard (or Common) Requirement or Project Specific (non-Common) Requirement. This to reduce duplication of requirement for each project and to provide a mechanism to measure and manage PP&E ‘standardisation’ (commonality) across the live projects.Engaging with end users to clarify and validate requirements through the design phase.Confirming that the proposed design meets user needs.Facilitating stakeholder workshops.Managing requirements using DOORS.
  • System ConceptsDue to specific needs of each project, it is highly likely that projects working independently to each other will select different system solutions. The Technical Leads are responsible for ensuring any concept down select considers opportunities for single, standardised, solution selection across the projects. This means in practice that any tools used (Functional Means Analysis, N2 Analysis, Whole System Solution Identification, Decision Matrix, Pugh Matrix) should prioritise standardisation.
  • System DesignDuring system design phase, the standardisation initiative shall champion specific principles, including:Reducing the number of different models and makes of equipment in use by seeking similarities across the projects and reuse of technical information between projects.Maximising the use of common sub-systems in different equipment.Minimising the number of different types, assemblies, etc.Maximising the use of commercial of-the-shelf (COTS) items; or use of modified of-the-shelf (MOTS) where a COTS solution would be non-compliant to a key functional requirement.
  • Detail DesignDuring detail design phase, the increasing use of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and the bringing of design under configuration control shall provide the opportunity to compare technical solutions. By determining the degree of standardisation for similar products between projects and by identifying areas of commonality
  • Evolution of DesignLater phases of the lifecycle shall seek to reduce the diversity of supplied equipment and champion standardisation whenever the design is revisited for improvement. Those elements of design output (requirements, technology solutions) where demonstrating standardisation should form the basis for any future offers / programmes.
