As a Lead Engineer, you will oversee and manage a team of up to four engineers and technicians, ensuring effective task allocation, performance management, and operational excellence. You will also play a hands-on role in the field, attending jobs where necessary and providing expert guidance to your team. Your team will be responsible for cyclic maintenance and fault rectification of key roadside technology, including CCTV, Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERT), MIDAS, RCC, NTIS, HAWIS, Traffic Signals, and Message Signs. You will ensure all maintenance and repair activities are carried out in line with National Highways and Technology Services quality plans, meeting contractual requirements and timescales. What you'll be doing
- Adhere to the ‘Zero Harm’ safety process at all times and record/report any health and safety concerns to the line manager as soon as possible.
- Provide a customer-focused, service-oriented, and commercial approach to all work.
- Supervise and manage a team of up to four engineers and technicians, ensuring efficient task allocation, workload distribution, and high performance.
- Oversee team responsibilities, including timesheets, annual leave, sickness, and absence management.
- Support field teams by attending jobs when necessary, providing guidance, and ensuring all work meets contractual KPIs and quality standards.
- Carry out cyclic maintenance and fault rectification on roadside technology, including CCTV, ERT, MIDAS, RCC, NTIS, HAWIS, Traffic Signals, and Message Signs.
- Develop and implement fault reduction strategies within each sector.
- Ensure NH Service Now data is accurately captured and recorded.
- Attend faults, knockdowns, and carry out corrective maintenance, including site and equipment reinstatement.
- Routinely liaise with the NH, RCC, and TOC.
- Attend meetings when required.
- Maintain proficiency in the operation and maintenance of all National Highways systems (hardware and software) within each Control Office.
- Responsible for regional engineers’ NHSS 8 sector scheme portfolios, ensuring CPS compliance.
- Respond to emergencies in line with emergency procedures and provide technical liaison for third-party faults.
- Ensure all equipment is logged, stored securely, and maintained at all times.
Who we're looking for
- Qualified to HNC or B/TEC Higher National Certificate in electronics/telecommunications engineering (or an agreed equivalent qualification), experience working on Motorway communications or closely related systems.
- NHSS8 Certified.
- Good knowledge of NH communications infrastructure and standards.
- Good knowledge of NH testing / ADAMr requirements.
- NMCS 2 Communications experience i.e. good all round technology experience e.g. MIDAS, CCTV, VMS, ERTs, NTIS, HAWIS, Traffic Signals etc.
- Good communication skills.
- Able to manage a team.
- Experience of working with the NRTS Contractor.
- Able to work in different areas of the network and be flexible on working approaches.
