As an inclusive, forward-thinking business, we take pride in our approach to investing in our people across Avara Foods and are looking for a highly competent and motivated Engineer to join our Engineering Team, based at our Telford site.
The role is a combination of factory-based and office-based so you’ll be working in a fast-paced, dynamic FMCG factory environment which is noisy and refrigerated in some areas, manufacturing short shelf life products where hygiene standards are critical. As a Level 5 Multi Skilled Technical Support Engineer you’ll be working 4 on 4 off Days, 06:00 to 18:30.
What will you be doing as Level 5 Multi Skilled Technical Support Engineer at Avara?
As a Level 5 Multi Skilled Technical Support Engineer, you will provide expert-level technical support, including advanced electrical fault diagnosis, engineering backup, and continuous improvement of on-site automation and electrical systems. You will also support system development and ensure compliance within control systems.
What will your key responsibilities as a Level 5 Multi Skilled Technical Support Engineer include?
- Creating and interpreting electrical schematics using WSCAD or equivalent tool.
- Diagnosing and resolving faults in LV DC/AC systems and control components.
- Troubleshooting machine safety systems (PILZ, Siemens, AB) in line with EN ISO standards.
- Identifying and resolving PLC faults (Siemens TIA Portal) and supporting other PLC platforms.
- Configuring and commissioning VSDs to ensure motor uptime.
- Repairing control panels, sensors, actuators, and I/O systems.
- Collaborating on root cause analysis, system upgrades, and SCADA/HMI integrations.
- Mentoring junior engineers and apprentices in best practices and safety.
- Monitoring SCADA/ systems and events logs to detect and address early signs of system faults.
- Coordinating OEM updates, firmware patches, and lifecycle upgrades with minimal operational impact.
- Managing preventative maintenance for PLCs, HMIs, and networking infrastructure and control devices.
- Supporting electrical and automation interfaces across mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
- Developing condition-based and data-driven predictive maintenance strategies.
- Ensuring all work is documented per CMMS and version control standards.
- Configuring and maintaining industrial networks (Ethernet, Modbus, VLANs).
- Troubleshooting IT/OT infrastructure and supporting systems integration.
- Maintaining accurate technical documentation and backups.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant industrial and cyber security standards (IEC 62443, NIS2, GAMP).
- Supporting automation project rollout, including FAT/UAT testing, and commissioning.
- Training operators, technicians, and engineers in system use and troubleshooting.
- Leading improvements in system reliability, performance, and fault prevention.
What you’ll need to be successful
- HNC/HND or higher in Electrical, Industrial Electrical Control, or Automation Systems.
- Siemens TIA Portal programming certification or equivalent experience.
- Hands-on experience in a fast-paced FMCG or manufacturing environment.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including occasional night shift support, to meet site demands.
- BS7671 17th or 18th Edition (desirable).
- Machine safety and risk assessment training (e.g., Pilz CMSE).
- Strong hands-on experience with both hardware and software in automation systems.
- Familiarity with pneumatics, hydraulics, and refrigeration systems (e.g., ammonia, glycol).
- IOSH or equivalent health & safety qualification.
- A proactive, problem-solving mindset with strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and personal accountability.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; confident team collaborator.
- Ability to mentor Maintenance Engineers and Apprentices.
- Self-motivated and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
