Overview

Join SVITZER as a Marine Engineer with the ambition to progress to Chief Engineer. This London-based role offers funded support to become Chief Engineer and opportunities for growth within a global towage and related services company.

Location: London operation. Team operates on a 1 week on/off rotation; crew can live onboard.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Excellence: Ensure all onboard machinery is in top condition and operate it during vessel operations.
  • Safety First: Maintain safe operation of vessels, engines, generators, and associated machinery.
  • Maintenance: Keep all machinery (deck and engine) up to operational standards at all times.
  • Ownership and Cleanliness: Ensure machinery spaces are clean, tidy, and hazard-free.
  • Reporting: Communicate breakdowns or faults to the Master and Superintendent Engineer and coordinate repairs.
  • Routine Upkeep: Perform routine maintenance and execute the Planned Maintenance System.
  • Resource Management: Maintain adequate lube oils and bunkers for continuous operations.
  • Health & Safety: Conduct regular checks and address or report issues promptly.
  • Regulatory Adherence: Follow company, MCA, and external guidelines; keep paperwork accurate and up to date.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and train engineering staff; foster a collaborative and efficient team environment.
  • Survey Coordination: Assist in dry-docking and survey planning; ensure timely completion of work.
  • Defect Management: Advise the Master on defects, maintain a defect log, and prioritise repairs with the Superintendent.
  • Inter-Departmental Collaboration: Work with both deck and engine teams.
  • Continuous Improvement: Engage in mandatory and professional development training.
  • Adaptability: Take on additional duties as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum STCW III/1 Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Small Vessel
  • All STCW basic training up to date
  • ENG1 Medical with at least 6 months until expiry
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Career minded with progression toward Chief Engineer
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to produce detailed, accurate reports
  • Expertise in fault diagnosis and machinery repair
  • Preferably experienced in harbour or terminal towage
  • Some deck experience advantageous
  • Strong administrative and computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
