What you’ll be doing

• Conduct on board ship trials and surveys and communicate with other departments, Design Services disciplines, customers and suppliers
• Carry out technical investigations into operational problems or developments, develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a team
• Support the development of best practice to increase the capability and performance of tools and processes
• Produce technical drawing guidance packages, detail parts lists and inventories through AutoCAD / Inventor design
• Represent the Mechanical / Piping team at project design reviews and support other colleagues on platform tasking
• Use various internal and external customer driven databases to source information

Your skills and experiences

Essential

• AutoCAD / Inventor design experience with the ability to produce detailed manufacturing & assembly drawings
• Understanding of detailed system and technical engineering drawings including manufacturing drawings with knowledge of projection layouts, scaling & tolerancing; knowledge of ship system engineering drawings (P&ID’s, diagrammatics, piping isometrics) and ship systems materials and equipment symbols
• Knowledge of maritime warship / commercial systems (fluid based systems, mechanical systems); ability to perform basic pressure loss and flow calculations and size pipework
• Knowledge of mechanical manufacturing processes
• Ship experience (build or in-service); understanding of RN ship / commercial mechanical / piping systems for various vessel classes
• Understanding of military and commercial ship related standards

About the Design Services Team

Design Services is the BAE Systems Maritime in-service technical support cell located within Portsmouth Naval Base. We employ approximately 180 personnel across Mechanical, Electrical & Combat Systems (ECS), Structures / Outfit (S&O) and HVAC to create modification design packages and reports for installation and integration on legacy warships. We work with Safety, Naval Architects and other disciplines to deliver modification design packages.
