Maritime Safety Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Maritime Safety Consultant to support a growing consultancy team focused on defence surface ship safety. This permanent role offers a competitive salary of £35 000–£60 000 and hybrid working from one of six UK offices with regular client site engagement.
Role overview
The consultant will provide expert maritime safety support within a consultancy environment, delivering technical project management, business development, and risk analysis services. Candidates should demonstrate a thorough understanding of defence surface ship safety regulations, including DSA02-DMR and Def Stan 00-056, and be capable of managing multiple concurrent projects.
Technical responsibilities
Apply detailed hazard and risk analysis techniques such as SWIFT, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA and LOPA to support safety assurance
Lead technical project delivery ensuring compliance with relevant defence standards
Prepare and deliver successful technical bids aligned with client requirements
Support business development activities and maintain key client relationships within the maritime safety sector
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including work on autonomous platforms where applicable
Oversee junior staff as required, contributing to team capability growthCandidate profile
Approximately four years’ experience working with UK defence surface ships, either within consultancy or directly from a Forces role
Comprehensive knowledge of maritime safety regulations and standards relevant to defence surface ships
Proven ability to manage and deliver complex technical projects and bids
Strong communication skills with high standards of technical writing and presentation
Degree qualified with professional registration (Chartered Engineer or equivalent)
Experience in client relationship management and business development is highly advantageousWorking arrangements
The role offers flexible hybrid working from offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Falmouth or Liverpool. Regular attendance at client sites and internal meetings is required. Candidates must be able to organise workloads effectively, particularly when working remotely.
