Join a nationally significant programme addressing one of the UK's most complex nuclear challenges. We're hiring a Mechanical Engineer to support the Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) Future State Programme at Sellafield, working within the NDA's flagship Programme and Project Partners (PPP) framework.
This contract role offers the opportunity to directly support the safe management of civil plutonium stocks, contributing to the design, validation, and integration of mechanical solutions across a high-integrity, safety-critical environment.
Role Overview
Deliver mechanical engineering designs that are safe, integrated, and operable across the full lifecycle
Produce deliverables that align with product requirements and plant configuration
Support Responsible Engineers with definition, verification, and validation activities
Ensure engineering solutions meet legal, safety, security, and environmental obligations (including CDM and Sellafield site licence conditions)
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and incorporate learning from experience (LFE) into project delivery
Identify technical risks and ensure solutions can be manufactured, installed, maintained, and decommissioned safely
Key Requirements
Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer (essential)
Minimum 4 years' experience in a relevant project design office environment
Strong understanding of nuclear, engineering safety principles, and plant lifecycle
Able to work on-site 3 days per week at Hinton House (team-embedded)
SC Clearance required (DV may be requested later)
Excellent teamwork, communication, and documentation skills
Experience
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards
Experience in contracting environments and/or on nuclear licensed sites
Relevant Sellafield or PPP project experience highly desirable
Contract Details
Rate: £46-£51/hour (via umbrella company)
Location: Hybrid - minimum 3 days/week on-site (Hinton House), SL-issued laptop provided
Security: SC cleared (or willing to undergo)
Duration: Long-term, project-aligned engagement
