A leading UK university is seeking an experienced Windows Server Specialist to join its Professional Services IT team. This role sits within the Operations Team, which is part of a wider Enterprise Technology Services group delivering critical backend infrastructure support, including networking, datacentre, telecoms, Linux, and Windows services.

Role Purpose

The Windows Server Specialist provides 2nd and 3rd line upgrading, maintenance, planning and support for Windows Server, Microsoft technologies, and integrated infrastructure systems. You will also support other team members, share your expertise across multiple technologies, and help ensure services meet agreed availability and performance standards to support education and research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical expertise across a range of service-delivery systems, including: Windows Server operations, backup, patching, databases, Active Directory, Group Policies, ADFS, DNS, MIM, Office 365, VMware ESX, SCCM, SCOM, and Certificate Authority.
  • Take operational responsibility for selected services as agreed with the Team Leader.
  • Install, configure, migrate, and decommission Windows servers and related Microsoft technologies.
  • Write and maintain scripts (PowerShell, VBScript, Windows batch) to automate routine tasks.
  • Manage and maintain backup solutions (Veeam experience advantageous).
  • Ensure systems resilience, monitoring, and fault alerting are in place to meet agreed service levels.
  • Keep documentation up to date for all systems, especially those with extended support hours.
  • Provide guidance to junior team members and deputise for the Team Leader when required.
  • Liaise with external suppliers and service providers to resolve faults.
  • Monitor service usage and plan for capacity and performance improvements.
  • Adhere to IT operational policies, change management processes, and security best practice.
  • MCSE/MCP in relevant technical areas, or equivalent technical expertise through experience.
  • Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience working with Microsoft Office 365 (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint Online).
  • Ability to design, implement, and maintain Windows services with associated Microsoft software.
  • Skilled in PowerShell, VBScript, and Windows batch scripting.
  • Experience with ADFS, DNS, MIM, Group Policies, and/or Microsoft Certificate Authority.
  • Strong experience with backups and restores (Veeam preferred).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
  • ITIL v2/v3 foundation certification or ITIL environment experience.
  • SQL Server design, installation, and performance tuning skills.
  • VMware ESX administration experience.
  • Networking protocol knowledge.
  • Experience with enterprise antivirus and encryption solutions.
  • Hardware/server/SAN troubleshooting experience.
