OverviewWe’re looking for a Mid Level Product Engineer (Backend) to join our growing team of backend engineers at Yonder. You’ll work on everything from what happens when a customer taps their card, to our in-house core banking system or our unique approach to credit card rewards. You’ll join a small engineering team with end-to-end ownership over the development lifecycle, system architecture and infrastructure, and you’ll wear many hats, building new micro-services and maintaining the infrastructure that they run on.What you’ll doBuild – Develop production-grade backend services in Scala, powering payments, core banking, and rewards systems.Design – Contribute to the architecture of distributed micro-services, design RESTful APIs and data flows, and participate in lightweight architecture reviews.Operate – Manage and improve cloud infrastructure (GCP), containerised workloads (Docker/Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines; monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise production systems; apply reliability, observability, and security best practices.Collaborate – Work closely with product and design to deliver features that delight members; pair with other engineers to review code and raise the team’s technical bar.What you’ll bringExperience with Production-Ready Services – Strong track record of building services that are robust and production-ready.Interest in Functional Programming – Appreciation for immutable data, flatMaps, and strongly typed APIs; knowledge of Scala is a bonus.Expertise in RESTful APIs – Solid background in designing and implementing RESTful APIs.Familiarity with Kafka or Event-Driven Systems – Experience with Kafka or similar event-driven architectures and integrations.Micro-services and Distributed Systems Experience – Proficiency in developing and managing micro-services and understanding distributed systems concepts.Customer-Focused Approach – Prioritise solving customer problems and business needs alongside technical work.Comfort with Ambiguity – Ability to set direction and navigate uncertainty in a fast-moving environment.Ownership & Drive – Thrive in a startup pace, taking ownership from idea to delivery under tight deadlines.Growth Mindset – Eager to learn, adapt, and tackle complex challenges.What’s in it for me?£53,578 - £68,267 annual salary depending on experience£34,064 - £60,994 stock optionsPlus 35 holidays (27 days annual leave + 8 public days)2x team-building offsites per year (1 UK, 1 abroad)Private healthcare with Vitality (mental health, dental & vision cover)16 weeks enhanced parental leave after 1 yearFinancial coaching with Octopus MoneyLearning & training allowance (£750/year)Regular team breakfasts, lunches, and eventsCycle-to-work schemeFresh pour-over coffee made by our CEOInterview processStage 1: Intro call (45 mins) with a recruiter to learn about you and the role.Stage 2: Case interview / take-home task (60 mins) to demonstrate your skills.Stage 3: Face-to-face interview (2 hours): two 60-minute interviews to discuss technical experience and a values interview.Stage 4: Reference check with a previous manager.Stage 5: Offer if everyone is happy; we aim to give a decision within 24 hours where possible.What’s it like working at Yonder?We’re office-first, remote-friendly.
