Power Systems Simulation Engineer (EMT/PSCAD)
4 Days Old
Overview
Power Systems Simulation Engineer (EMT/PSCAD) at WSP — join to apply and help shape the energy transition. The successful candidate will analyze and improve the transient performance of power systems, ensuring the stability, reliability, and resilience of electrical grids, with a focus on the integration of renewable energy sources, HVDC systems, and FACTS devices. The role involves conducting detailed EMT simulations and assessments to support critical operational and planning decisions.
Responsibilities
- Model and simulate the performance of renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar) and converter-based systems (e.g., HVDC, STATCOM, SVC) including their control systems to assess their impact on the grid.
- Develop models for EMT simulations based on real-world data and equipment specifications, ensuring accurate representation of grid components.
- Conduct EMT simulations for power systems using PSCAD to analyse system behaviour under transient conditions.
- Perform detailed electromagnetic transient studies, such as switching and fault studies, equipment energisation, TRV/ZMP studies, insulation coordination studies and others with the aim to evaluate the system's transient response and complement equipment design.
- Analyse voltage transients, switching overvoltages, and lightning surges, providing recommendations for equipment protection and system improvements.
- Lead or participate in grid compliance studies (especially EMT), ensuring that generation and transmission projects meet regulatory and technical standards.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in grid integration of renewables, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and smart grid technologies.
- Knowledge of national grid codes and standards (e.g., Grid Code, ENTSO-E, NERC, CIGRE).
- Knowledge of grid-forming technology and the different control architectures and implementations.
