Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations – Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness.
Salary: up to £87,000 + car / car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.
Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time OR Part Time | Flexible First options available.
The role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Cable Project Engineer to join our SSEN Transmission team. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert technical leadership across cable engineering activities, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality outputs and guiding project scope, strategy, and risk resolution. You’ll play a key role in shaping the approach to cable design and delivery across the 132kV, 275kV, and 400kV transmission network within our licence area.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary Cable engineering contact, coordinating with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.
- Lead the development of detailed substation cable design packages, including key line diagrams, scopes, and specifications aligned with national standards.
- Mentor and support senior and junior engineers, contributing to the growth of technical capability within the cable engineering discipline.
- Manage external consultants and contractors, ensuring high-quality outputs and technical competence.
- Drive innovation and process improvements, identifying opportunities for advancement in tools, methods, and technologies, and representing the team at industry events.
Qualifications
- A degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline, ideally with Chartered Engineer status or a clear path toward achieving it.
- Demonstrable experience in the design and specification of transmission systems, with the ability to critically assess technical solutions.
- Strong understanding of engineering standards, legislation, and technical requirements for transmission network design and operation.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to influence, collaborate, and present technical information effectively.
- Proficiency in technical design software, report writing, and quality assurance in both manufacturing and operational site environments.
