Data Centre projects aim for longevity, mission-critical performance, cost efficiency and sustainability, including converting existing infrastructure where possible and designing new energy-efficient structures. The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Principal Electrical Engineer who will act as the technical discipline lead in the data centre sector and become a permanent member of our Building Engineering Team. You will be responsible for electrical design packages and the overall electrical discipline from brief through design to installation and commissioning support. The role includes mentoring and developing junior colleagues and providing technical guidance on discipline-specific data centre projects. Arup University will support your career development and there are opportunities for progression through Sustainable, Innovation and Digital Development in the Data Centre sector and exposure to market-leading clients.
This Role Will Involve
- Leading the planning and managing the delivery of the electrical work packages on medium and large-scale complex mission-critical projects
- Ensuring all designs and documents are prepared and reviewed to the highest standards
- Leading projects and working closely with data centre clients to deliver quality work to meet their needs
- Presenting technical material for review by technical and non-technical audiences
- Contributing to conceptual design studies and reports for your discipline and package
- Mentoring junior team members in their career development, including technical and soft skills
- Managing finances and staffing resources to ensure successful delivery within budgets and timescales
- Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams maximizing experience at local, regional and global levels
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for a candidate who is
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Master's level or equivalent preferred), with Chartered Engineer status (CIBSE / IET or equivalent)
- An accomplished Senior / Principal engineer who wants to further develop design and project management skills on fast-paced, highly technical Data Centre projects, leading multi-disciplinary design teams and taking responsibility from inception to completion
- Experienced in leading complex electrical engineering projects, particularly within data centre environments, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly through sketches, drawings, and written documentation
- Proficient in electrical design software and power system modelling tools such as SKM, ETAP, or similar, with experience in power flow studies, short circuit and arc flash analysis
- Able to plan and organise effectively in fast-paced, multidisciplinary project environments
