We provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle, supporting the energy transition globally.

About The Role

Mott MacDonald has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Electrical Engineer (HV Cable Design) to join our expanding Power Transmission and Distribution team. The successful candidate will work on a range of diverse, industry-leading projects to develop innovative solutions for power transmission grid systems and client transmission and distribution installations, ensuring security of electricity supply and integration of renewable energy sources.

This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with major utilities and large global customers in a rapidly changing energy sector.

What You’ll Be Doing – Key Responsibilities

  • HVAC/HVDC Cable System Design: from conceptualization to implementation for Onshore and Offshore projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate HV cables into substations, converter stations, and grid networks.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost analyses for transmission cable system projects.
  • Front End Engineering Design (FEED): deliver innovative solutions for cable systems integration into major infrastructural development projects.
  • Consenting Stage Cable System design: lead interface with civil and environmental teams to plan transmission cable delivery in line with consenting requirements.
  • Tender Stage Design/Detail Design for transmission cable systems, from concept to construction detail.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve transmission cable-related issues during installation and operation/maintenance phases.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in HV cable materials, insulation, and transmission technologies.

Essential – Candidate Specification

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Experienced transmission cable systems engineer
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to solve complex engineering problems related to transmission power cable systems
  • Willingness to engage with new challenges and ability to work confidently on tasks with prior experience
  • Good written communication skills, including report writing

Excellent communication and people skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in design of both onshore and offshore transmission cable systems
  • Experience in design of HV cable transmission systems for UK and Ireland utilities
  • Experience in design of HVAC and HVDC transmission cable systems
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering

Beneficial

  • Experience in offshore substation design (conceptual phase)
  • Irish project experience
