Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Principal Engineer for Medical Gas, Asbestos & Lifts. This is a rare opportunity to join a forward-thinking Estates team at GOSH, where innovation, safety, and excellence in engineering directly support life-changing care for children and young people. Venn Group is partnering with the Trust to recruit for this role. As Principal Engineer, you will lead the coordination of Authorised Persons, drive compliance across critical systems, and shape the future of the hospital's infrastructure. You will oversee safe systems of work across mechanical, electrical, and fabric disciplines, with a focus on ventilation, confined spaces, and working at height. Your technical expertise will guide medical gas, lift systems, and asbestos management to ensure resilience and regulatory excellence. This role supports strategic estates planning, capital upgrades, long-term infrastructure development, and the Trust's Net Zero ambitions.

Main duties of the job
- Support the ongoing development of robust Safe Systems of Work (including Standard Operational Procedures) for all major M&E disciplines and coordinate and act as the AP/RP lead relevant specialist areas with a focus on ventilation; there is also an expectation to support other specialist areas as required
- Help the operational lead develop the CAFM-based maintenance programme to work in parallel with the AP and CP structures to ensure compliant maintenance and PPM regimes, along with accurate reporting and ensuring it reflects granular levels of Trust assets and is reflective of GIP
- Act as the point of contact for Medical Gas; Asbestos; PSSR and Lifts including associated specialist fields (not limited to) assurance queries, specify solutions in line with best practice and relevant legislation, and oversee that this work is undertaken as required
- Lead the Water Compliance & Assurance team
- Lead and manage projects to successful completion
- Provide advice to the Trust on engineering elements in business case preparation and submissions, and support with annual conditional backlog assessments for ERIC (focusing on engineering infrastructure)
- Responsibilities for policy and service development include initiating ventilation policies in line with statutory regulation and the Trust compliance team
Qualifications and experience
- Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) status or equivalent experience
- Deep knowledge of HTM standards and healthcare engineering systems
- Current Chartered Engineer or working towards accreditation (or equivalent experience) as part of the GOSH culture and values
Person specification / Skills & Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to command confidence amongst a range of professionals and levels within the organisation
- High level of IT/computer skills; experience of giving presentations on technical issues
- Ability to develop positive and effective working relationships internally and externally
- Experience of working in a senior estates-related position with track record of delivering significant change in a complex environment
- Experience with NHS procedures, systems, legislation and guidance; experience producing or contributing to estates policies
- Demonstrable experience as AP/RP for key services within the PE portfolio and senior project/programme management
- Management experience delivering a diverse range of maintenance and minor works projects on time and within budget
