Job title: Principal Engineer – Structural Engineering

Responsibilities

  • Undertake and define functional design and/or provide specialist advice and qualification of scope of responsibility and provide evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose.
  • Obtain confirmation beyond reasonable doubt by review, surveillance and audit that assumptions underpinning engineering data, analysis methodologies, and interpretation of results have been validated; assist to define the requirements therein.
  • Produce evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and provide specialist support for associated activities.
  • Lead the identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and manage resulting change embodiment activities.
  • Liaise with internal and external customers as required to ensure that their requirements are adequately supported and incorporated where appropriate and agreed.
  • Provide realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans.
  • Lead assurance activities that determine the design is adequate i.e. robust, in providing supporting documentation for the safety case.
  • Access, understand and apply the Quality and HS&E Management System documentation (e.g., Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Risk Assessments).

Your skills and experiences

  • Experience in mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Proficient in classical stress analysis with the ability to apply relevant first principles/standards or code-based formulas.
  • Experience in finite element analysis methods and/or software, or significant experience assessing such reports.
  • Experience in manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and testing processes within the business or comparable industries.
  • Ability to apply naval and industry standards, including relevant environmental regulations.
  • BENg – Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartered status.
  • Bachelor/Master Degree with significant experience.

The Structural Engineering team

As the Principal Engineer – Structural Engineering you will execute, evaluate, deliver and manage complex engineering and/or cross-functional tasks or programmes of work, recognizing stakeholder and customer requirements. You will identify and implement opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that professional capability of the business and individuals are maintained and improved.

We offer relocation support across all Submarine roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
