Principal Engineer/ Technical Manager (Ground Engineering) role at Sweco. Based at the Leeds office with flexible working: minimum 3 days per week in the office/on site and adjusted start/finish times. Relocation to Leeds City Centre anticipated mid next year from Chapel Allerton.

What does the role involve?

You’ll be an active member of the Ground Engineering team delivering a diverse portfolio of projects across the UK for market sectors including highways, water, energy and development. The Ground Engineering team provides a wide range of geotechnical design services across all project stages including feasibility studies, ground investigations, geotechnical interpretation, preliminary and detailed design, and construction supervision for geotechnical works.

Sweco offers engineers diverse experience across industry sectors with geotechnical activities including ground investigation specification and management, earthworks and structures designs, and construction stage support. You will join a very experienced and enthusiastic team that has recently supported the British Antarctic Survey’s £100M Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme and delivered detailed geotechnical design for projects such as the Queensferry Crossing, Stockholm Metro Extension, A47 improvement programme, major junction improvements for the M2, M25 and M27 motorways, and Beauly HDVC Converter Station.

Responsibilities Include

  • Health & Safety: Ensure H&S is an integral part of design and construction solutions, adhere to statutory and company procedures to identify and mitigate risk, and inform others of residual hazards.
  • Client Relationship Management: Manage relationships with client contacts to maximise opportunities and provide a high service level on projects; build market base in geotechnical opportunities.
  • Project Delivery: Provide high quality technical delivery and governance on geotechnical projects; act as geotechnical discipline lead on multi-disciplinary projects; direct geotechnical teams and liaise with project teams and clients; support team manager with workload and resourcing.
  • Financial/Commercial Management: Prepare and track project budgets; manage projects within the Sweco Project Management Framework; administer contract functions including change and risk management.
  • People Management: Support the Team Manager in leading a geotechnical engineering team; mentor team members to develop skills and foster continuous improvement.
  • Business Development: Contribute to preparation of PQQs and tenders; identify cross-selling opportunities and manage related commissions in consultation with others.

To Be Successful In This Role, You’ll Have

  • A successful track record of delivering major infrastructure geotechnical design projects.
  • Significant technical experience in geotechnical engineering applied to transportation, water, energy and development projects.
  • Experience in project management including programming, resourcing and monitoring.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams.

In Terms Of Qualifications, You’ll Have

  • A BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or BSc/MSc in Engineering Geology or Earth Science.
  • A MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or related field is desirable.
  • Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Geologist (CGeol) status.
