The Opportunity

We have a permanent Lead Senior Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid position with shared office space in Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We welcome applications from Senior Engineers across Scotland.

Amey Consulting Scotland Team are involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and related infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, with the Southwest awarded in 2020 and the Northeast in 2022. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country. These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects associated with Scotland’s arterial road network.

The role

Our Lead Senior Civil Engineers play an important part within the Design team and alongside our client, Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Civil Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of road schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team to deliver technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme
  • Oversee the actions of more junior staff and take responsibility for their actions
  • Be responsible for the commercial success of projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing costs
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries
  • Contribute to bids and the general work-winning function
  • Promote effective health and safety practices within the team

What you will bring to us:

  • Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, likely in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements; capable of supervising junior staff
  • Experience in managing health, safety and welfare tasks, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and CDM Regulations
  • Capable of acting as day-to-day main engineering contact for a project where required (e.g. Contractor’s Responsible Engineer for Network Rail schemes)
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes with ability to advise others (Design Team Leader) and check designs to a high standard
  • High proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools; ability to check others’ work
  • Strong understanding of CDM and risk assessment with experience in hazard and risk management and mitigation
  • Capable of acting as Principal Designer for appropriate projects
  • Supervisory and people-management skills; ability to manage a medium-sized, locally based single-discipline technical team
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts
