Job Title: Senior / Principal / Associate – HVDC Engineer

Location: Manchester, England


About the opportunity:

A leading international engineering consultancy’s High Voltage Power Systems teams are experiencing significant growth. They are seeking Senior, Principal, and Associate Electrical Engineers to join their office within Manchester. Working across transmission and distribution sectors, projects cover HVAC and HVDC feasibility and FEED, design, project management, techno-economic assessments, and regulatory and advisory services.

The teams provide specialist power systems advice to a wide range of clients in the energy, rail, nuclear, building, and utilities sectors. Projects include offshore wind, interconnectors, utilities, nuclear facilities, data centres, and industrial sites.


Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver specialist power system consultancy services for transmission, distribution, and HVDC projects.
  • Conduct feasibility, design, and advisory studies for HVDC systems.
  • Support bids and business development initiatives while working on individual and team projects.
  • Understand client requirements and provide innovative, pragmatic, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Travel independently within the UK and occasionally overseas to industrial and project sites.
  • Mentor junior engineers within the team


They are looking for:

  • PhD, MSc, MEng, or BEng in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Systems, or a related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership with the IET.
  • Strong experience in power system transmission and distribution.
  • Experience interfacing or working with OEMs, utilities, and consultancies.
  • Knowledge of UK and international grid connection processes and Grid Codes.
  • Extensive understanding of HVDC technologies and project delivery.
  • Proven experience on HVDC projects, including interconnectors and onshore/offshore schemes.
  • Expertise in HVDC system studies with excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Postgraduate degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Systems.
  • Experience using power system analysis software such as PowerFactory, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, ERACS, SKM.
  • Proficiency in modelling languages such as DPL or Python.
  • Experience performing insulation coordination studies, protection settings, cable thermal ratings, transformer design, system losses calculations, cost/benefit analysis, and earthing study design (CDEGs).
