Overview
We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Manchester office. Hilson Moran are interdisciplinary consultants, engineers and advisors, applying progressive design thinking to shape the environments we live in. We provide a full range of engineering services, exciting innovation and design solutions on a wide range of projects from across our network of offices in the UK and globally.
You will deliver design services across a diverse and challenging range of projects, with experience across different scales, complexity, sectors and geographies. Ideally you will hold professional accreditation or be pursuing it, and you will have an extensive portfolio demonstrating your expertise.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside project leads, managing small projects while supporting project coordination.
- Deliver a range of large, complex and niche projects, from engineering-only technical projects to larger schemes, on time and to a high technical standard, with management support.
- Act as discipline lead on projects of scale and complexity.
- Monitor quality control on projects to ensure compliance with client briefs; prepare calculations, specifications and drawings as required.
- Support day-to-day project delivery, ensuring high technical standards.
- Act as a key client interface at project level when the Project Director cannot attend; understand client requirements and align them with project goals; foster long-term client relationships.
- Engage in Project Director marketing activities and develop a network of industry contacts and clients.
- Assist in the development of fee proposals and presentations; support QA and compliance across projects.
- Collaborate with the Project lead to evaluate challenges, develop solutions, mitigate risks and identify opportunities for future projects.
- Be present and visible within the project team; provide leadership and guidance, including performance assessments and development where applicable.
- Support early career staff learning and development and promote a growth culture.
- Monitor design work and provide technical training to staff; liaise with the BIM team to ensure drawing requirements are understood.
- Assist the Project Manager in identifying additional work and securing appropriate fees where applicable.

Background & Qualifications
- MSc or BSc in Environmental or Engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status or a strong ambition to achieve chartership through CIBSE or IMechE.
- Senior-level mechanical engineering experience on commercial projects, including new builds, refurbishments and fit-outs.
- Experience in laboratory, light industrial and/or hotel developments.
- Understanding of sustainable building design, renewable energy and low-carbon technology.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 requirements.
- Expertise in Building Services Engineering Systems in a design office setting.
- Strong analytical skills and a proactive, adaptable, client-facing engineer with good communication at all levels.
- Experience with design and build projects is advantageous.

- Strong technical expertise demonstrated through client presentations and relationship-building.
- Ability to review calculations, specifications and drawings for compliance with client briefs; assist in project finances with the Project Director.
- Apply technical skills to deliver complex projects; foster innovation, creativity and design excellence.
- Effective communication with senior clients and stakeholders; assess project variations and advise on scope, program and fee adjustments.
