Join to apply for the Principal Mechanical Engineer role at Stantec. The position is based in the UK with hybrid working (in-office and home working) and options to be based in Leeds or Cambridge. The role focuses on delivering mechanical engineering solutions for water sector projects within an industry-leading consultancy.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the full project life cycle from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support, including site surveys and investigations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical leaders, design engineers, clients, supply chain partners, contractors, planners, and other stakeholders to achieve positive project and community outcomes.
  • Provide technical leadership to junior team members and support their development.
  • Produce and review technical outputs such as technical specifications, reports, pumping and water system designs, schedules, and related documentation.
  • Participate in collaborative planning reviews and assist with design of pumping systems and water infrastructure; provide construction and commissioning services.
  • Contribute engineering input to outputs in collaboration with other disciplines (e.g., GA drawings, 3D models, control philosophies, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams).
  • Deliver technical presentations to clients and other design engineers; participate in workshops, safety reviews, HAZOPs, and ALMs.
  • Understand lowland drainage pumping station operation and assess existing site infrastructure to deliver mechanical designs; awareness of Eel Regulations 2009 and their implications on flood and coastal pumping stations.
  • Support opportunities in energy, infrastructure and water sectors as applicable.

Qualifications

  • Experienced Mechanical Engineer, ideally chartered with the IMechE.
  • Experience in mechanical design with pump station optioneering, construction management, and commissioning.
  • Proven ability to produce and review technical specifications and reports; sizing and designing pumping systems and water systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to deliver technical presentations; capable of leading and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Ability to contribute to multi-disciplinary design outputs (GA drawings, 3D models, control philosophies, P&ID).
  • Understanding of lowland drainage pumping stations and relevant regulatory considerations; interest in UK water-sector projects.
