Position Available: Principal Mechanical Engineer

Location: Essex (4 days onsite per week)

Experience needed: Proven expertise in mechanical design and development, ideally within the space, aerospace or defence, industry, with advanced CAD skills and strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and environmental engineering challenges. Experience using PTC Creo and Windchill would be extremely beneficial.

About the role

We're seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of bespoke mechanical solutions for cutting-edge space missions. You'll take projects from concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings, creating robust, high-quality designs for imaging sensors, test cameras, front-end electronics, and associated assembly tools, jigs, and transport packaging.

Working within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment, you'll ensure each solution meets demanding specifications for shock, vibration, and heat transfer, while balancing cost, lead times, and manufacturability. Your work will play a key role in enabling the next generation of space exploration and scientific discovery.

This role is ideal for experienced engineers from space, aerospace, or advanced engineering sectors who are passionate about solving complex technical challenges.

What we need from you:

• Solid experience mechanical engineering with a focus on product design and development
• Proficiency in CAD software. Ideally with PTC Creo and Windchill
• Ability to interpret FEA results and apply insights to refine designs
• Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and environmental engineering considerations
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills
• Proven track record of leading projects and delivering high-quality results
• Experience with ECSS or MIL-STD standards (preferred)
