Responsibilities

You're joining a team that's passionate about building on the foundations of our 'one-bank' approach to deliver simple, safe and secure solutions for NatWest Markets, enabling our people, clients and businesses to thrive.

As a Principal Platform Engineer, you'll be driving the delivery of a next generation platform which will underpin the development and delivery of NatWest Markets electronic trading systems. You'll play a leading role in planning, developing and deploying a platform to support high performance, robust and resilient systems for the bank, while leading engagements with senior stakeholders to explore and suggest appropriate technical solutions to achieve the required product features.

You'll have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills as you manage the technical delivery of one or more platform engineering projects.

  • Overseeing the definition of the technical strategy and advising on product roadmaps and migration plans to achieve strategic goals
  • Making sure that the bank's systems follow excellent architectural and engineering principles, and are fit for purpose
  • Monitoring the technical progress against plans while safeguarding functionality, scalability and performance, and providing progress updates to stakeholders
  • Designing and developing reusable libraries and APIs for use across the bank
  • Writing unit and integration tests within automated test environments to ensure code quality

Qualifications

The skills you'll need

You'll come with a background in platform engineering, software engineering, or software architecture, as well as significant experience building a platform to support applications within an SOA or microservices paradigm.

You'll bring an excellent understanding of implementing architectural best practices, especially around scalability, availability and performance.

You'll also need:

  • A thorough understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration management using frameworks like Terraform or Ansible
  • Subject matter expertise in containerisation with experience of using the Kubernetes orchestration framework
  • Experience proactively managing security vulnerabilities in container environments and maintaining organisation approved golden container images
  • Proven experience architecting and deploying large-scale telemetry platforms to support complex, real-time trading systems
  • Hands-on experience designing CI/CD pipelines for Java applications, including fully automated deployments
  • Comprehensive cloud architecture knowledge, including successful migrations of applications from traditional data centres to public cloud platforms
