Principal / Senior C&I Engineer (F&G) position with Wood. Hybrid working arrangement with Tuesdays and Wednesdays based out of Aberdeen, Glasgow, or Staines. Occasional travel to client sites as required. Role requires passing the UK Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.
Role
As a Principal / Senior Fire and Gas Instrument Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of fire and gas detection systems for gas plant environments. You will ensure safety, compliance, and operational integrity of high-hazard facilities, and oversee detailed engineering documentation including design specifications, cause and effect diagrams, functional schematics, F&G layouts, philosophies, and system architecture. You will select instruments for hazardous areas and ensure compliance with UK safety regulations. You will coordinate with engineering, safety, and operations teams to integrate F&G systems with existing plant safety infrastructure, lead technical reviews, vendor evaluations, and inter-discipline coordination to maintain high standards of quality and safety. You will contribute to technical assurance, support audits and incident investigations, and drive continuous improvement in engineering practices.

Responsibilities
- Develop fire and gas detection system designs tailored to gas plant specifications and industry standards
- Prepare design documents (Detailed Design Specification, Cause & Effect diagrams, Functional diagrams, F&G layouts, Fire and Gas Philosophy, instrument specifications, BOM, system architecture, operation narrative)
- Select suitable instruments for hazardous applications
- Perform inter-discipline reviews of deliverables
- Produce material requisitions and contribute to technical bid evaluations
- Review vendor drawings and consolidate comments from other disciplines
- Implement control systems for fire and gas detection with seamless integration to plant safety systems
- Ensure compliance with UK safety standards and regulations for gas plants
- Conduct safety audits and risk assessments to identify hazards and improve system reliability
- Lead projects for installation and upgrade of fire and gas detection systems in gas plants
- Coordinate with safety, engineering, and operations teams to ensure project success
- Maintain detailed records of designs, installations, maintenance, and compliance checks
- Provide regular reports on system performance, incidents, and improvements
- Adhere to discipline procedures and contribute to continuous improvement
- Support development and delivery of technical safety standards and technical assurance
- Participate in audits and incident investigations as required
- Maintain own competence and pursue continuous professional development
- Provide discipline support to the business
- Stay aware of regulatory framework and industry developments and share with reports

- Experience designing and managing fire and gas detection systems in gas plant settings
- Strong knowledge of UK safety standards and regulations related to fire and gas detection
