Overview

Principal Systems Development Engineer, Region Services – AWS EMEA SARL (UK Branch). This role is based in London and focuses on DevOps / SRE / Systems Development Engineering within the Region Services team. The candidate will own automation, improvement and simplification of operational and business workflows, identify and resolve systemic issues, and work with development, operations, solutions architects, and customers/partners to strengthen services. The role combines systems design, architecture, software development, and process improvement, with an emphasis on resilience engineering and engineering best practices. Key job responsibilities

  • Provide support and guidance as the department prepares to bring the service online and receive customer traffic for the first time.
  • Measure operational activity in local teams, coordinate process adoption and improvements to operational efficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, collect metrics, monitor performance, and raise the bar for consistency and quality through automation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including other PEs, senior SDEs, Fitness/Perigee program in the US Dedicated Cloud Solutions team, and local service product teams.
  • Understand customer needs and design new features or capabilities, potentially delivering new services for worldwide use.
  • Capture requirements, perform conceptual design, assist dev teams in ramping, overcoming obstacles, and delivering and launching new products in the UK.
  • Define and iterate an operational improvement framework and mentor local junior engineers.
  • Build relationships with US teams and promote Amazon's day-one culture within the department.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with complex distributed systems.
  • Excellent coding skills with the ability to develop high-quality software solutions while mentoring engineers in best practices.
  • Expertise in systems design (single component and distributed systems).
  • Breadth of experience across a broad service portfolio.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Large (enterprise) scale experience in highly complex and/or heavily regulated industry sectors.
  • Start-up experience is advantageous.
  • Ability to dive deep into automation, security, and operational excellence.
  • Cryptography, cross-domain, and deep security experience are desirable but not essential.
