What you will do

  • Work as part of a diverse team of engineers, scientists and modellers from conceptual design through to detail design and engineering.
  • Ensure consideration of appropriate design standards and guidance including GISTM (Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management), CDA, ICOLD or applicable local standards.
  • Lead and input into the design and assessment of mine waste facilities including tailings facilities, water storage facilities, waste rock dumps and integrated waste facilities, from concept design through detailed design and into operational and closure phases. Inputs may be direct but are anticipated to predominantly be in collaboration with junior team members and may include stability assessments, deposition modelling, filter compatibility assessments, technical specifications, designer risk assessments, operations, management and surveillance manuals, and reporting.
  • Travel to site or project offices (by mutual agreement) to carry out site inspections, dam stability reviews, oversee Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) or attend meetings and workshops.
  • Project management including drafting proposals and cost estimates, client liaison, reporting and invoices, project closure and client feedback with support from the project management team within the mining group.
  • Manage technical delivery of projects including management and direction of multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Mentor junior staff in their professional development and execution of duties.
  • Provide input to internal training modules, including developing materials and presenting them in training sessions and lunch-and-learn sessions.
  • Engage in practice area networks for international collaboration and networking; participate in conferences with papers, presentations and poster competitions.
  • Assist with marketing campaigns where required and develop a client base, actively seeking out and winning new work.
  • Provide input to team strategy development and specialised technical input focused on tailings management facilities, heap leach facilities, water impoundments and waste rock dump design, soil mechanics, soil improvement methods, geosynthetic materials engineering and related civil engineering work for projects worldwide.
  • Liaise with the Mining Team networks, including specialists within WSP nationally and internationally; participate in Europe’s Mining Team meetings and calls as required.
  • Support others in business development activities including preparation of technical proposals.
  • Adhere to WSP values and the Code of Conduct; maintain a safety-first attitude and align actions with WSP’s Equality Policy and health and safety policies.

What we are looking for you to demonstrate

  • Degree qualified in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering or engineering geology, with a strong emphasis on soil mechanics.
  • Knowledge of national and international design guidelines and regulations.
  • Mining and geotechnical experience related to mine waste disposal/facilities.
  • Ability to interpret and monitor results and use tools to design geotechnical structures and assist clients with operational requirements.
  • Theoretical and practical experience of project management and consultancy, including supporting client relationships, projects and project teams.
  • Ability to manage and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and internationally, and on occasion to remote environments.
