Job Title: Assistant Project Manager (Water Sector) Location: Portsmouth Region Job Type: Permanent, Full-time (38 hours per week)
The Role
We are seeking a degree-qualified Civil Engineer to join our team as an Assistant Project Manager, supporting the delivery of a critical major project in the Portsmouth Region.
You’ll work closely with the Project Manager to oversee planning, procurement, construction, and handover of key pipeline and network projects. This role is ideal for candidates currently working as Project Engineers or Assistant Project Managers within the water sector. This could be across clients, consultancies or contractor organisations.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Project Manager in the delivery of water infrastructure projects from design to completion. Attend and contribute to stakeholder meetings, ensuring alignment across design, construction, and delivery teams. Prepare and support monthly progress reports, governance papers, and programme updates. Manage design interfaces with approved suppliers and ensure NEC contract compliance through CEMAR. Lead procurement activities and monitor contractor performance. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to secure approvals and ensure compliance with regulatory targets (ODIs). Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and to quality standards within agreed budgets. Key Requirements
Degree-qualified Civil Engineer (or equivalent discipline) – essential. Proven experience in UK water sector capital delivery projects (AMP7/AMP8 experience highly desirable). Background with a client organisation, consultancy, or Tier 1 contractor in the water industry. Familiarity with NEC contract management and CEMAR systems (desirable). Professional membership (e.g. MICE, APM, PMI) preferred. Strong stakeholder engagement, coordination, and communication skills. Excellent analytical and organisational capability. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams). Full UK driving licence (driver assessment required). Benefits
