The Opportunity

The post is a Rail Civils Design Engineer working within a multidisciplinary team delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail projects as part of a growing Rail Business. Your work content will include producing preliminary and detailed engineering layouts; technical studies and reports; generation and evaluation of technical design options; design calculations and analysis; specialised report writing and interfacing with other disciplines.

You will also be responsible for providing civil engineering design capability to railway projects, and to provide civil engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway design within an environment of high quality and timeliness.

The Bristol Rail Civils team forms part of the wider Bristol Rail Team under the Mid-West Transport Group umbrella. The Bristol Rail Team is formed of a cohort of approximately 30 enthusiastic engineers, designers, managers and technicians with expertise across the Track, OLE, Civils, Depots technical sub-disciplines, in addition to design, project and commercial management. The Rail Civils Team itself is a small, agile team of 8. The Bristol Arup office includes a multitude of multidisciplinary businesses with over 250 staff. The Bristol Rail Team works closely with other Rail Teams across the UK, particularly the larger Birmingham Team who also form part of the Mid-West Transport Group. Within the team we have a wealth of experience of railway design, construction, installation, and commissioning, working on an extremely wide variety of small and very prestigious projects both in the UK and overseas.

The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing Civil engineering and design management expertise. The focus will be on developing existing design skills and experience of managing design tasks, in a stimulating and challenging project environment, and so enhancing Arup's overall track and rail capability. There are also opportunities for placements in other offices, including overseas.

Is this role for you:

Your role will include the production of conceptual and detailed railway designs and calculations within single discipline and multidisciplinary rail projects across all design stages. The ideal candidate will manage the identification and elimination/mitigation of risks during the design process within your own discipline, liaising with relevant parties to manage and communicate at various design stages.

You will support the Rail Civils CRE when requested in technical forums such as IDCs, Design and Construction Interface meetings and design reviews and will likely undertake client-facing roles supported by other senior colleagues. Designs will be produced within Bentley software products whilst working within Common Data Environments, as well as working within relevant legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice, and guidelines.

It is expected that you will be able to integrate with colleagues and operate with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose for the successful delivery of projects, the Rail Business, and Arup, with the ability to work well as part of a team with good attention to detail. You will be responsible for planning and managing your own work and the work of others within the defined scope of a small activity or project, with minimum supervision. You will contribute to the sharing of skills and knowledge to junior colleagues and be open to acting as a 'buddy' for new starters.

Our current portfolio of multidisciplinary projects across various stages includes several large depot facilities, SESRO, and the Bakerloo Line Extension.

Qualifications:

· Bachelors or Masters Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent.

· Have or be actively working towards a professional qualification with a relevant professional body e.g. IEng/CEng/MICE.

· An appropriate HND supported by a number of years' experience may also be considered.

· Any other post graduate achievements (Diploma, PhD, etc.) would be an advantage.

Essential Skills/ Knowledge:

· Good quality of written English.

· Hands-on experience of the Production of detailed track designs and calculations.

· Experience in the UK rail industry is essential (and to a lesser degree overseas).

· Underpinning knowledge of civil engineering design principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods.

· Appreciation of railway systems, and the key interactions between other railway assets, and with railway operating practices.

· Experience in the use of Common Data Environments (ProjectWise Explorer) and the adoption of BIM data management processes.

· Able to work under nominal supervision and supervise more junior staff.

· Committed to quality, accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency in delivering engineering technical requirements. Resolute in seeing projects and tasks through to a successful conclusion.

· Experience in the application of CDM and CSM or equivalent on railway projects.

Desirable Skills/ Knowledge:

· Competent in providing project documentation to different Clients to meet requirements.

· Knowledge of route alignment, drainage, signalling layout, formation and structural principles and design would be a benefit.

· Commercial and Technical management skills in administering project controls change process and financial forecasting.

· Design management responsibilities within a small team or project.

· Experience in software development and coding.
