Overview

The role

The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), home of the 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC), is looking to recruit a Research Engineer in PHY Design for Future Communication Systems. This position involves a range of research and development activities in Signal Processing for Future Communication Systems, focusing on Advanced Physical (PHY) Layer design for traditional and emerging computational platforms (e.g., analogue, neuromorphic) in accordance with specified internal and external 5G/6GIC research projects. ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT. It hosts over 200 researchers and has world-class testbeds, labs and computing facilities. Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre researching end-to-end aspects of 5G, working with national and international partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was launched for 2030+ research in parallel with 5G+.

Responsibilities

Undertake research and development activities in Signal Processing for Future Communication Systems with emphasis on the PHY layer for current and emerging platforms; contribute to internal and external 5G/6GIC projects; collaborate with the ICS team on design, simulation, and validation of PHY algorithms; engage with experimental platforms and testbeds as required.

About you

The successful candidate must have:

  • Deep understanding of MIMO and massive MIMO systems for 5G systems and beyond
  • Deep knowledge of advanced signal processing techniques for 5GNR Physical Layer, including MIMO and massive MIMO detection and precoding
  • Very strong coding skills (e.g., C, Matlab)
  • Prior experience with wireless research platforms (e.g., USRPs)
  • An overall working knowledge of 3GPP cellular networks (e.g., LTE, 5GNR)
  • An understanding of the current and future challenges in 5G and Open RAN systems
  • Hardware and/or software implementation of digital signal processing algorithms in actual, real-time systems
