Role Overview

We are looking for a Research Engineer to join the Applied AI team at InstaDeep and push the boundaries of AI for Industrial Optimization. You will design, implement, develop and deploy state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms and research ideas for real-world optimization challenges. Research Engineers are involved at every step of the project life cycle, from providing technical expertise and establishing projects before sales, to driving R&D for POCs, developing MVPs and deployable industrialized solutions. This role involves applied research and development to adapt existing techniques and, when needed, design new techniques to solve the problem at hand. The Applied AI team works on large industrial optimization problems for clients such as Deutsche Bahn and Frankfurt Airport, using deep reinforcement learning and high-performance computing methods to design AI optimizers for production.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and implement scalable deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms to leverage modern hardware and distributed systems (GPUs, TPUs, etc.).
  • Write production-grade code.
  • Report and present research and development work to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AI researchers, engineers, product managers, and business development teams.
  • Represent InstaDeep at technical conferences, customer meetings, and other events as needed.

Requirements

  • A university degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning or a related field.
  • Proven professional experience in research or applied machine learning roles in the domain of Reinforcement Learning.
  • Solid understanding of software development, data engineering, ML and RL principles.
  • Proficiency in Python and modern ML libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX).
  • Understanding of version control workflows (GitHub, GitLab) and clean coding practices.
  • Right to work full-time in the United Kingdom.
  • Working from the Paddington office at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

  • Experience applying RL algorithms to combinatorial optimization problems.
  • Hands-on experience in high-performance computing environments (e.g., Kubernetes, Ray, Dask).
  • Expertise in related fields such as Computer Vision, Representation Learning, or Simulation Environments.

Our commitment to our people

We empower individuals to celebrate their uniqueness. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and encourage growth through an authentic, inclusive environment. We operate on a hybrid work model with guidance to work at the office 3 days per week to encourage collaboration and innovation.
