Safety Design Engineer
(Senior / Principal Level – Hydrogen Plant Design)

We are developing breakthrough hydrogen production technologies, and we need a seasoned Safety Design Engineer to ensure our innovations meet the highest safety and regulatory standards. In this senior role, you’ll shape the design of pioneering hydrogen systems, working with world-class engineers to bring safe, efficient, and future-ready solutions from concept to reality.
Key Responsibilities
Lead design risk assessments and ensure compliance with PED, DSEAR, PSSR, and ATEX for systems involving hydrogen, high-pressure gases, and thermal processing.
Identify safety risks in equipment designs and propose robust, practical solutions.
Specify and design safety systems, control strategies, and protective measures for hydrogen and syngas equipment.
Develop and review P&IDs, HAZOPs, and process safety documentation with engineering and R&D teams.
Ensure designs meet all pressure systems legislation, including preparing written schemes of examination and documentation for certification.
Support safe design and layout of pilot plants and commercial units (e.g., modular skids, enclosures, safety zoning).
Collaborate with regulators, notified bodies, and third-party safety assessors to secure project approvals and certifications.
Mentor junior engineers and champion a proactive, safety-first culture across the business.
Requirements
BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering.
10+ years’ experience in process safety and design engineering, ideally within the energy, hydrogen, or chemicals sectors.
Strong working knowledge of:
DSEAR – Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations
PSSR – Pressure Systems Safety Regulations
ATEX directives & hazardous area classification
PED – Pressure Equipment Directive
Proven expertise with high-pressure hydrogen systems, valves, containment, and safety instrumentation.
Demonstrated ability to lead HAZOPs, risk assessments, and produce detailed technical safety reports.
