Safety Engineer Job Description:
An opportunity has arisen for an engineer to exploit their safety engineering skills to influence the safety aspects of one of our technically complex products. While exploring the boundaries of best practice, this will involve optimising the effort devoted to safety assurance, with the goal of balancing safety against the inherently lethal attributes required of complex weapon systems.
Responsibilities:
The role is to deliver the safety analysis and assurance that will enable one of our products to be integrated onto a range of platforms, domestic and export. This will involve working closely with MBDA project teams, as well as UK and international authorities. The successful candidate will be required to liaise with key stakeholders (including, but not necessarily limited to, external customers, the platform authorities and stakeholders within MBDA) and take a leading role in the update and evolution of the required safety analyses, Safety Case Reports and the associated Safety Management Plans. The main emphasis will be on ensuring on-time delivery of these artefacts and coordinating the evidence required to satisfy suitable mitigations.
In support of this, experience of the following is expected:
Construction of safety arguments and authoring of Safety Cased Reports; Hazard management and risk analysis, including functional failure, fault tree and event tree analyses; Thorough understanding and experience of how the hazard analysis process integrates with the system engineering process to influence the design. Provision of support to internal and external project Safety Panels and Committees; Liaising with other functions in order to ensure effective hazard mitigations; Working with systems teams in order to support the safety aspects of the product certification programme; Understanding of DEF-STAN 00-056 (and, ideally, other similar international standards), including the ability to define and write Safety Management Plans that meet its requirements; Detailed electronic engineering experience is highly desirable (education to degree or HND level or a comparable level of experience is preferred). Experience of other engineering disciplines (especially software) is also desirable. IEC 61508/DO178C/DO-254/DEF-STAN 00-055 experience (desirable). Hazard identification exercises (such as SWIFT and HAZOP); Good verbal, written communications analytical and problem solving skills. Track record as an effective team player with strong interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary / multi-national team.
