Description

We are looking for a 2nd Engineer (watch keeper) for the cruise vessel MITSUI OCEAN FUJI.

Position summarised below; responsibilities and qualifications are listed in the sections that follow.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain a safe engine room watch whilst the vessel is at sea, at anchor and in port in accordance with Company Policies, any National or International standards and any other prescribed regulations.
  2. Execute safe and efficient performance of Main and Auxiliary engines.
  3. Lead safe operations of machinery and equipment, monitoring engine control systems in the engine room.
  4. Execute repair and maintenance work in areas inside and outside of the Engine Room. Oversee maintenance in accordance with Company Policies and compliance with Public Health or any other prescribed regulations.
  5. Ensure proper coordination with different technical parties and departments.

Reporting Structure

  1. Reporting to the Staff Engineer.

Safety Duties

  1. Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions.
  2. Complies with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  3. Leads by example with regard to Health and Safety of self and others.
  4. Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are used correctly; provides training, guidance and supervision where necessary.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  1. Valid STCW95 certification.
  2. Valid CoC A-III/1.
  3. Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
  4. Extensive experience in subordinate positions and on board passenger ships in a similar role; preferable experience with Wärtsilä engines.
  5. Physically and medically fit.
  6. Moral integrity.
  7. Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses are appreciated.
  8. Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals.
  9. Alaska experience is a plus.
  10. Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience recommended.

Language requirements: Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. Ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written form and to engage with guests and crew. Additional languages are beneficial.

Computer knowledge: Good working knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft applications.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive bending, climbing ladders, stairs. Lifting or pushing up to 50 lbs. Overtime and irregular schedules. Work in Engine Control Room and engine spaces with noise and distractions.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Act as Chief Engineer’s representative during Engine Room watch; supervise on‑watch team and ensure watches are carried out properly, with rounds of machinery and steering gear spaces to observe and report malfunctions or breakdowns; follow emergency procedures.
  2. Operate and maintain Main Engine and associated Auxiliary Engines.
  3. Execute maintenance, operation and repairs in the Engine Room.
  4. Know the vessel’s handling characteristics and stopping distance; be fully conversant with safety features and the Company’s VMS.
  5. Ensure seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department.
  6. Maintain adequate stock of spare parts and consumables onboard to cover planned and unplanned maintenance.
  7. Delegate work to Oilers and Wipers.
  8. Be familiar with the operation and location of lifesaving, fire-fighting and pollution prevention equipment.
  9. Keep log of all watch operations and conditions.
  10. Assist lower-ranked Engine Officers in familiarisation of the Engine Room, Control Room and equipment.
  11. Participate in on‑board operational planning and coordinate with Hotel Department on maintenance issues to minimise shipboard disruption.
  12. Report completed maintenance to Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer for entry into the planned maintenance system.
  13. Routine pumping operations; operate diesel generators, emergency diesel generator, emergency fire pump, purifiers and air compressors.
  14. Care for and maintain firefighting equipment, safety equipment, fire doors and watertight doors in the Engine Room.
  15. Carry out fuel and ballast operations per Company procedures and prevent pollution of the marine environment.
  16. Ensure stability and stress conditions remain within safety limits at all times.
  17. Maintain technical maintenance and repairs inside and outside the Engine Room, including boilers, oily water separator, separators, compressors, evaporators and osmosis systems, bilge and ballast systems, thrusters, stabilisers, steering and rudder machinery, and related components.
  18. Keep Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer promptly and fully informed of problems or deficiencies.
  19. Ensure compliance with Company, Public Health, National and International standards; report non-compliance to the Chief Engineer.
  20. Maintain and update Engine log book and related records (Oil Record Book, Wastewaters, Oil to Sea, Marine Fuel Sulphur, etc.).
  21. Monitor subordinates’ working/rest hours and overtime; maintain 100% compliance with Company and ILO/MLC requirements.
  22. Comply with ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, safe working practices, MARPOL, pollution prevention, STCW, Oil Record Book, ILO/IMO/ITF/MLC 2006, Ballast Water Management, US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program, and Bahamian Merchant Shipping legislation.
  23. Lead, train and develop subordinates with coaching and performance management.
  24. Enforce uniform and grooming standards; promote good conduct across departments.
  25. All other duties as assigned.
