Overview

Automata, London-based, is transforming life sciences automation. We are scaling globally and are seeking a world-class Staff Platform Engineer to own the platform layer of a product that scientists worldwide will depend on. Build modular, automated infrastructure that scales with minimal effort.

Responsibilities

  • Containerisation & Orchestration: Lead the design and deployment of Kubernetes clusters across local and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Automation by Default: Define and implement automation-first practices using IaC (Terraform, Pulumi), GitOps, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. ArgoCD, Flux, GitHub Actions).
  • Resilient Platforms: Build for global scale with low operational effort, ensuring performance, resilience, and modularity.
  • Greenfield to Global: Deliver infrastructure iteratively - shipping usable systems early while laying the foundations for future growth.
  • Observability & Reliability: Deploy and operate monitoring, logging, and alerting with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and similar.
  • Security & Secrets Management: Integrate tools like Vault, Consul, Traefik, and service meshes to secure and streamline deployments.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with product engineers, data teams, and ML engineers to ensure the platform accelerates delivery.

Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in Kubernetes and Docker, with hands-on experience in both local clusters and cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • A proven track record of delivering containerised solutions in product companies.
  • Strong background in automation (IaC, CI/CD, GitOps) as a default way of working.
  • Experience iterating greenfield solutions into production-ready, global-scale platforms.
  • Comfort with supporting tech: Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD/Flux, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Vault, Consul, Traefik, NATS.
  • Product/platform mindset - balancing speed of delivery with long-term maintainability.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with hybrid deployments (cloud + edge).
  • Exposure to high-volume or mission-critical products.
  • Familiarity with service meshes and advanced container networking.

Benefits

  • Hybrid working: 3 days in our London office, balanced with flexibility.
  • Competitive package, plus the chance to do career-defining, meaningful work.
