We are recruiting a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, for somebody with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including various scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries.
Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. They’ll need to decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production. We aim to regulate to protect people and the environment from emissions and to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
You will be asked to have an incident role and to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
Responsibilities
- provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training
- develop strategy for our sectors and produce tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes
- commission and manage external research projects where needed
- work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players
As a member of the Energy & COMAH team within the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate, you will contribute to:
- defining standards for our sectors and providing strategic direction and tools in support of regulation
- guidance and training to deliver new duties
- environmental best practice
Experience/Skills Required
- ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and to encourage consideration of diversity issues
- relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, including knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant
- ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia
- ability to work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals

- The vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November. The role may require some travel.

Competence Examples (Lead Capabilities)
- Legislative Knowledge: Applies knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect both the Environment Agency and the environment. Describe regulatory requirements for two differing combustion installations and how their environmental impacts differed.
- Works in Teams: Demonstrate experience working as part of a team to deliver a portfolio of work and how priorities and responsibilities were agreed.
- Builds and Sustains Relationships: Demonstrate how you have worked with different stakeholders and adapted your approach accordingly.
