The Opportunity

We have a permanent Senior Structures Engineer role to join our Consulting Structures Team in Belfast. With shared office space in our Belfast office and the ability to work remotely we invite applications from across Northern Ireland.

Our 130 strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects for clients including Department for Infrastructure Roads, Translink, National Highways, Transport Scotland and Network Rail. The multidisciplinary team includes Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, and is the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This ecosystem offers opportunities to grow in a knowledge-rich environment with mentors.

  • £6m Lichfield Southern Bypass Railway Bridge
  • £50m Churchill Flyover PTSI and Deconstruction
  • Lifecycle management for the DBFO2 Network in Northern Ireland (M1, A4 and A1)

The role

As a Structures Engineer you will provide effective support to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Structures schemes, while taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team and delivering technically sound engineering solutions.
  • Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from quotation to handover.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
  • Liaising with Client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings and responding to queries.
  • Managing a small, locally based single-discipline technical team and delivery of their workload.
  • Contributing to bids and the general work-winning function.
  • Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us

  • Developed experience and expertise within the Structures field, gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce or oversee technically sound engineering solutions, compliant with relevant technical standards and Client requirements.
  • Ownership for preparation and checking of deliverables and ability to check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g. LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Good commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
  • Experience in management and communication of hazards and risks with appropriate mitigation and transfer.
  • Understanding of interface management and alignment of deliverables with other disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE, or an equivalent professional licence (desirable and may be essential on particular contracts).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
