Senior Civil Engineer – Highway Design and Planning

Jacobs is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to lead Highway Development projects in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The role requires technical excellence, project leadership, and stakeholder collaboration to deliver safe, high‑quality infrastructure for the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and construction of highway projects, ensuring compliance with design standards such as Manual for Streets 1 & 2 and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
  • Manage programmes of varying complexity, keeping them on track and within budget while identifying and mitigating risks early.
  • Collaborate with contractors, utility companies, local members, and internal teams to streamline delivery and build trust across the board.
  • Support junior engineers, fostering a collaborative working culture and driving capability development within the team.
  • Provide technical leadership, resolving complex engineering challenges and ensuring project outputs—drawings, reports, and models—are accurate, timely, and aligned with council policy.

Essential Qualifications

  • Extensive professional experience in highway engineering design and construction.
  • Project Management experience, with a proven track record of delivering programmes on time and within budget.
  • In‑depth knowledge of relevant design standards, including Manual for Streets 1 & 2 and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence people at all levels.
  • Knowledge of the English planning process and experience liaising with local authorities.

Location & Working Arrangements

The position is based in Stevenage and requires two days of office work per week, with flexible arrangements to support wellbeing and performance.
