Senior Civil Design Manager – BESS & Renewable EPC Projects - Glasgow, United Kingdom


Key Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and develop a civil design team (engineers, CAD/BIM technicians), providing training, mentoring, and technical guidance.
  • Define civil engineering design standards, QA/QC processes, and workflows for consistent project delivery.
  • Lead civil design for HV BESS and renewable EPC projects, covering site layouts, foundations, drainage, access roads, earthworks, and cable trenching.
  • Review and approve internal and external design packages, ensuring compliance with UK regulations, Eurocodes, BS standards, and CDM.
  • Drive innovation to improve constructability, reduce costs, and minimise environmental impact.
  • Oversee digital design systems (BIM, Civil 3D, Procore) to streamline processes and coordination.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and procurement teams to deliver fully integrated designs.
  • Provide technical support during construction, resolving design queries and ensuring safe, compliant delivery.


First 12 Months Objectives

  • Recruit and onboard a high-performing civil design team.
  • Establish standards, templates, and QA/QC systems for BESS civil design.
  • Deliver civil design packages for at least 30 MW of projects within budget and programme.
  • Embed multidisciplinary collaboration workflows with electrical and mechanical teams.
  • Identify opportunities for cost optimisation and sustainability improvements.


Requirements


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Civil/Structural Engineering; Chartered (CEng, MICE, MIStructE) or close to chartership.
  • 8+ years’ civil design experience, ideally in HV substations, BESS, or renewable infrastructure.
  • Proven track record in team leadership, technical mentoring, and scaling design functions.
  • Strong knowledge of EPC project delivery, multidisciplinary coordination, and design assurance.
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, STAAD, Tekla; familiarity with Procore and BIM preferred.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
