Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Senior Design Engineer located in Nottinghamshire. The ideal candidate will be expected to lead, and take responsibility for, the design of new machine tools, accessories and supporting systems from concept to production, ensuring solutions meet project and customer requirements. The individual will be responsible for component and assembly design tasks often producing bespoke systems which include mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics and electronics tailored to customers’ needs based on the company’s platform technologies.

Reporting directly to the product director they will be responsible for component selection, design integration and defining and updating the Bill of Materials across a range of products. The role will require the ability to effectively communicate the solutions developed across all areas of the business from production to sales. The individual will also be required to present at weekly operational meetings and internal design reviews demonstrating how designs meet the required design specifications, alongside supporting the commercial team with customer queries when required. The right candidate must bring an innovative approach to solution development and be happy to operate outside of the box and go the extra mile to deliver quality for the customer.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2nd Class degree in related engineering discipline (Design / Mechanical / Manufacturing)
  • 10 years+ industry experience in engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years CAD experience preferably SolidWorks with a portfolio of work ideally around bespoke machines
  • Experience in managing design projects from concept to production
  • In-depth experience of electro-mechanical systems or automation within a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in managing design history files and corresponding revision and CAD libraries
  • Experience in leading design reviews and developing evolving designs to achieve optimised solutions through gated review framework
  • Understanding of safety and legislation requirements relating to machine design (CE, UL, ISO, PUWER, HASAW etc.)
  • Keen interest and willingness to learn about and develop advanced manufacturing technologies
  • General software competencies Office 365 package (Word, Excel etc)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to manage own workload to ensure assigned tasks are achieved in a timely fashion
  • Strong emphasis on maintaining high quality and attention to detail
  • Experience in the manufacturing industry is a plus
  • UK resident, or must have right to work in UK

Responsibilities

  • Design and create 3D models of electromechanical systems utilising SolidWorks
  • Take ownership of design tasks and deliver within project timelines, budgets and contribute to project management activities.
  • Lead the design team providing technical leadership, final design sign-off and quality control
  • Support continuous improvement and implementation of design methodologies
  • Manage, maintain and ensure quality of the design process and drawing pack in line with the requirements of appropriate certifications
  • Produce manufacturing detail drawings, GA’s and CAD models for external manufacture and for internal assembly
  • Work within the development team on realisation, manufacturing and installation of individual machine builds
  • Work closely with sales and production teams to ensure seamless product integration into manufacturing
  • Maintenance and development of BOM’s and produce machine user manuals
  • Understanding of regulations and standards, and keeping up to date with future changes
  • Manage key machine component selection including replacement of discontinued and obsolete parts alongside management of key component supply chains
  • Selection of, and coordination with, specialist contractors and suppliers
  • Preparation of estimated project costs and defined supplier quotes where required
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to agree specifications and gain drawing approvals
