Overview

The role: The candidate will need to have a strong design background and be able to work within a team environment, supporting the design delivery of existing projects and the growth of the existing client base. Previous experience and knowledge of the local Civil Engineering market is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Design delivery of the geotechnical elements of existing and future projects
  • Co-ordinate with other engineers both in the regional offices and between groups
  • Prepare budgets, proposals and resource requirements for projects
  • Prepare calculations, drawings and other documents and ensuring these are controlled during the execution of projects
  • Support less experienced staff, sharing knowledge and acting as a coach or mentor
  • Specify and/or manage site examination and investigation work
  • Identify and manage risks for the work to agreed acceptable levels
  • Develop the relationship between the company and new and existing clients in order to identify potential work
  • Contribute to the management of the company by participating in Action Groups
  • Comply with the Company Health & Safety procedures, Quality Assurance/Environmental Management system procedures and documentation, CDM Regulations and general legislation
  • Provide support to the Quality Manager by participating in training, audits and providing feedback

Skills & Experience Required

  • MEng/BEng in Civil Engineering, with an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering and/or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience post-graduation in Geotechnical Engineering and Geotechnical Design to current UK standards, particularly Eurocodes, with detailed understanding of the following Geotechnical processes: Earthworks; Remediation; Earthworks Design; Soil nailed slopes; Reinforced soil slopes and walls; Piled foundations; Shallow foundations; Embedding retaining walls; Gravity retaining walls; Deep basements; Ground improvement/treatment; Environmental Engineering
  • Use of computer software for the analysis of geotechnical problems, preferably to include the use of Finite Element or other numerical methods
  • Geotechnical report writing both Ground Investigation and Geotechnical Design Reports to BS EN1997 and the production of design specifications
  • Preparation of design documentation, e.g. Forms F001 and F003 on Network Rail projects
  • Budget control and programming
  • Supervision of a Geotechnical team
  • Excellent communication both oral and written
  • Ability to work on own and within a team to meet project, client, company and personal objectives
  • Ability to provide technical direction to a team of geotechnical professionals
  • Ability to present the outcomes of Geotechnical designs to other professionals both internally and to exterior clients
  • A challenging attitude to the solution of engineering problems in order to achieve cost effective designs and develop innovative solutions
  • Awareness of the importance of costs and the need to complete projects on time and to budget
