Overview

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading developer / operator in the high-voltage distribution / grid sector. They\'re investing heavily in network expansion, upgrade, and reliability improvements, including EHV/HV cable systems, substations, and grid interface work. This is a senior technical leadership role with real influence over design standards, project technical decisions, and cross-functional coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, specification, and delivery of HV / EHV distribution system components: substations, switchgear, cable systems, protection & control.
  • Oversee interface with network operators, DNOs / TSOs, and regulators to ensure designs meet grid codes and technical specifications.
  • Manage technical procurement and vendor oversight: ensuring equipment / materials meet standards, cost, and performance expectations.
  • Provide technical leadership: mentoring junior / mid-level engineers, reviewing deliverables, ensuring quality, safety, reliability.
  • Lead or contribute to testing, commissioning, safety validation of grid connections, cable systems, switchgear, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK regulations, safety standards, design codes, and ensure best practice in reliability and maintenance support.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in HV / EHV electrical engineering / grid distribution, including significant design, specification, commissioning work.
  • Strong knowledge of UK grid codes, technical specifications, statutory and regulatory standards for HV distribution.
  • Proven experience with cable systems design (both underground & overhead), substations, switchgear, and protection & control systems.
  • Experience working with or coordinating with distribution network operators (DNOs), transmission system operators (TSOs), and regulators.
  • Strong leadership / mentoring skills and ability to drive technical accuracy across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication skills & ability to solve complex technical problems.

Desirable / Nice to Haves

  • Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent).
  • Experience with EHV cable joints / terminations / jointing technology.
  • Previous role in high-capacity / high-profile grid infrastructure / upgrade projects.
  • Experience managing vendor evaluation, materials procurement in grid/HV context.
