Our team is delivering work across the Transmission and Distribution sectors in the UK and supporting other energy and infrastructure sectors. We are growing our Electrical Engineering team and seeking a Principal Engineer to join us. You will be based in Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, or remotely, and will build strong, trusted relationships with clients, understand their needs, and convert opportunities into successful workstreams.

You will be accountable for leading FEED and Detailed Design activities for National Grid, SSEN-Transmission, or other Transmission & Distribution clients, with a strong focus on client engagement and delivering high-quality technical solutions.

Responsibilities

• ProvideTechnical Leadership on FEED and Detail Design workstreams for National Grid, SSEN-Transmission, or other Transmission & Distribution clients.
• Ensure quality assurance and delivery of FEED, Detailed Design, and bids; ensure adequate resources and training for FEED and detailed design work.
• Act as BP141 (former TP141) / equivalent assurance engineer where required (candidates working towards BP141 HV Plant / Substation qualification will be considered).
• Review HV plant aspects of projects (HV layouts, elevations, maintenance access drawings, earthing design and reports, mechanical interlocking, HV busbar calculations, and technical specifications) and act as Principal Designer Representative when required.
• Coordinate with back-office engineers, sub-contractors, and suppliers; manage tender packages as tender manager and address HV plant aspects of technical offers.
• Attend and chair Design Review and Hazard Review meetings; review HV plant design packages; participate in site visits, FAT and SAT; demonstrate strong communication and teamwork.
• Maintain a customer-focused approach, identify client needs, and apply business development skills.

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience, with experience in Substations Design in the UK Transmission sector.
• Chartered Engineer through the IET, or working towards.
• Experience in a leadership/management position in a similar environment; strong understanding and leadership of engineering projects through asset lifecycles.
• Track record of leading teams in Front-End Engineering and design or Detailed Design of EHV (132kV-400kV) substation projects.
• Experience working for a client organisation such as a transmission system owner/operator, distribution network operator, or a design consultancy delivering to such organisations.
• BP141 / TP141 HV Substation qualification or equivalent, or ability to obtain; ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Experience in coaching and developing junior engineers; flexibility to travel to client sites when required.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines, manage competing priorities, and balance time effectively; right to work in the UK.
